A 38-year-old Malaysian national was recently taken into custody by Australian authorities in Victoria last Tuesday (25th June).

The suspect, an internal courier, had reportedly just got off a flight from Malaysia to Avalon Airport in Victoria when his luggage was examined by airport security. According to Coconuts, officers found two pellets containing heroin inside his bag.

Suspecting that he may be carrying more drugs internally, border police called an ambulance and the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Upon arriving at the airport, the AFP arrested the Malaysian suspect and sent him to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, where he defecated more heroin-filled pellets. According to The Star, the Australian border police and the AFP said in a joint statement saying,

“The man was taken into custody by AFP officers and transported to hospital for further medical treatment. While in hospital, a further 13 pellets were located, also containing heroin.”

According to AFP’s statement on Facebook, a total of 16 pellets were expelled by the suspect.

The Malaysian has since been charged under Section 307.2 of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth), which carries a maximum prison sentence of 25 years. An excerpt from AFP’s Facebook post on this case reads,

“This is the reality of internal drug trafficking, it starts on the streets and ends with a big ole mess in a hospital bathroom. It’s not only disgusting, it’s life-threatening – for both couriers and drug users.”

“Internal couriers are used by criminal syndicates to lessen the risk of getting caught themselves. They are comfortable sending couriers out knowing they could die if something goes wrong. Do you want to be part of this evil trade?”

Meanwhile, the Malaysian suspect will be detained until his next court hearing, which will take place at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 17th September.

Let’s hope that the authorities issue a fair and just punishment on this suspect if he is found guilty.
